Out of equilibrium generalized Stokes - Einstein relation : determination of the effective temperature of an aging medium

چکیده

We analyze in details how the anomalous drift and diffusion properties of a particle evolving in an aging medium can be interpreted in terms of an effective temperature of the medium. From an experimental point of view, independent measurements of the mean-square displacement and of the mobility of a particle immersed in an aging medium such as a colloidal glass give access to an out of equilibrium generalized Stokes-Einstein relation, from which the effective temperature of the medium can eventually be deduced. We illustrate the procedure on a simple model with power-law behaviours.

Effective temperatures and the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation for particle suspensions.

The short- and long-time breakdown of the classical Stokes-Einstein relation for colloidal suspensions at arbitrary volume fractions is explained here by examining the role that confinement and attractive interactions play in the intra- and inter-cage dynamics executed by the colloidal particles. We show that the measured short-time diffusion coefficient is larger than the one predicted by the ...

Fluctuation-dissipation relation in a colloidal glass : frequency and aging time dependence

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the Generalized Einstein Relation (GER), a particular form of a fluctuation-dissipation relation, in an out-of-equilibrium complex fluid. Micrometer beads, used as thermometers, are immersed in an aging colloidal glass to provide both fluctuation and dissipation measurements. The deviations from the Generalized Einstein Relation – GER ...

Nonequilibrium Brownian Motion beyond the Effective Temperature

The condition of thermal equilibrium simplifies the theoretical treatment of fluctuations as found in the celebrated Einstein's relation between mobility and diffusivity for Brownian motion. Several recent theories relax the hypothesis of thermal equilibrium resulting in at least two main scenarios. With well separated timescales, as in aging glassy systems, equilibrium Fluctuation-Dissipation ...

Microviscosity, microdiffusivity, and normal stresses in colloidal dispersions

In active, nonlinear microrheology, a Brownian “probe” particle is driven through a complex fluid and its motion tracked in order to infer the mechanical properties of the embedding material. In the absence of external forcing, the probe and background particles form an equilibrium microstructure that fluctuates thermally. Probe motion through the medium distorts the microstructure; the charact...
